Where history and adventure meet on the open road
The Route 66 Green Book Project celebrates the timeless joy of travel the thrill of discovery, the freedom of the highway, and the stories that connect us along the way.
Inspired by the travelers who once relied on the Travelers Motorist Green Book for safe passage, we honor their legacy by reigniting the spirit of exploration that continues to define Route 66 today.
Our Mission
To weave together past and present in ways that enrich, inspire, and empower:
Authentic Storytelling.
We partner with local historians, educators, and community members across Oklahoma to recover and record the lived experiences of Green Book travelers—ensuring our narratives echo community voices, not just archival fragments.
Place-based Connection.
Through hosting the Smithsonian’s Negro Motorist Green Book traveling exhibition at Langston University and installing historic markers across Oklahoma, we anchor stories in real landscapes. These markers name what once was and invite passersby to pause, reflect, and explore.
Engagement & Discovery
Field trips, road-trip challenges, and community events create interactive pathways for families, students, and visitors to explore Route 66 with purpose, pride, and curiosity.
Transformative Travel
Our project is more than remembrance—it is an invitation. We invite new generations to step into a journey shaped by resilience, mobility, justice, and freedom.
A Living Contribution to Oklahoma Tourism
By celebrating the joy of travel and spotlighting the diverse stories that define America’s most iconic highway, the Route 66 Green Book Project strengthens Oklahoma’s identity as a destination for cultural tourism. Each marker, exhibition, and event contributes to a broader movement—drawing visitors, educators, and road-trippers from across the nation to experience the heritage, hospitality, and enduring spirit of the Mother Road.
